Description
We establish the existence of Skyrmion-type solitons that have a Z_N topological quantum number. Thus, a configuration of N such Skyrmions have a topological quantum number that is equivalent to zero. It is reasonable to accord a fractional topological charge to such solitons, 1/N. Interacting with chiral fermions, the induced fermion number on these solitons will indeed be 1/N. We show that such solitons arise in the non-linear sigma model based on the manifold corresponding to the coset space SO(N^2-1)/SU_{adj.}(N). Crucial in this analysis is that \Pi_1(SU_{adj.}(N))=Z_N.
