Description

Both measurement standards and documentary standards, are key enablers of the commercialization of emerging technologies. As quantum continues its accelerating delivery of real-world solutions, it is a key time for the development of standards to validate these technologies and to set performance and interoperability criteria.

In recognition of the importance and timeliness of quantum technologies, IEC and ISO launched a new joint technical committee on the subject in January of 2024. Over the last two years JTC 3 has formed a number of work groups to cover the application areas of quantum computers, sensors, communications as well as terminology, random number generation and enabling technologies.

This presentation will provide an overview of the emerging structure of JTC 3 and the standardization projects which have been recently launched. It will also provide a summary of Canada’s participation to-date in the joint technical committee, and areas where more Canadian expertise would be beneficial. Through this presentation we hope to raise awareness and interest in this important standardization work and to increase membership and participation of Canadian technical experts in IEC/ISO JTC 3 Quantum Technologies through the Canadian Mirror Committee.
