Description
By treating the body as a mechanical system, this interactive workshop invites participants to examine how forces and torques manifest themselves during popular Pilates low-impact exercises that most students are already familiar with and therefore can relate to. Workshop participants will develop an intuitive understanding of center of mass and the equilibrium concepts. The full scope of the workshop activities includes: pre-exercise prediction, physical enactment, and post-exercise reflection. The sense-making is facilitated by the use of multiple representations, including kinesthetic experience, free-body diagrams, and equations of static equilibrium for forces and torques. The workshop models study sessions that can be customized for university-level introductory physics class or a high school physics class studying dynamics and statics topics. The workshop encourages but does not require participants to complete Pilates exercises, therefore making it accessible to participants of varied physical abilities.
