HOTELS

Students looking for hotel rates lower than those of the recommended hotels in Rio and Itacuruca, please contact our Secretariat. Camping at Itacuruca might be possible in special cases, also contact our Secretariat for further enquiries.

POSTER SESSION

Participants willing to present a poster in LISHEP should send their name, session in which the poster will be shown, title and an abstract of around 200 words, to Maria Elena Pol (polme@cbpf.br) before March 20th. 2006. The size of the poster should be a maximum of 1.2 m height and 1.0 m width.

PRESENTATIONS
The following facilities will be available : * Retroprojector for Slides
* LCD Projectors to be used with your Laptop or with the Laptop/PC from the organization
* Pen Drive to copy your talk and later put on the web page
* Microphones and loud speakers * VRVS for outside attendance. The rooms will be announced on the web page.
Remote participant asking questions through VRVS are welcome. * If you have any technical question send it to Eduardo Revoredo or to Jose Afonso L. Sanches
about available hardware and software.

TUTORIALS

We will have two Tutorials:
- Video Conferencing with VRVS and/or EVO.
- DEMO about the monitoring software MONALISA.

See our Schedules of Session B and Session C for more details. We advise all those who have not experience with these softwares to attend the tutorials, as they are important for people working in HEP Collaborations.

 

TRANSPORTATION

From Airport to Hotel Gloria and or Hotel Novo Mundo - Session B

We strongly advise you to take a blue taxi from COOTRAMO, which you can book in advance from their web page, or you can book and pay it at a desk in the airport. The price of the run is R$ 49, which is about U$D 23, for LISHEP participants (please tell them that you are from LISHEP). Yellow taxis are cheaper but with COOTRAMO you will have better and safer services.

Please inform beforehand the Secretariat of the date and time of your arrival, airline, flight number and departure city. 

From Hotel Gloria to the University (UERJ)
Conference Room: Auditorium 11

 

1. BY TAXI:  Taxis are available in front of the Hotels. A run to UERJ costs around R$15,00 wich are at your expense.

 

2. BY METRO:

The nearest metro station, CATETE, is at about 10 minutes walking distance from the Hotels. There, you take the train going in the direction SAENS PENA , at ESTACIO station you comute to line 2 (LINHA 2), direction PAVUNA and get out at station MARACANA, which has a direct exit to the University (nearly 300 meters away from the station). A schematic view of these lines and its stations can be found here.
Remember to print and carry with you the maps, of UERJ and surroundings and building plants which are available at the web.

From Airport to Hotel Pierre - Itacuruçá Island (Mainly to Session C)

For participants arriving on April 2nd:
1. a shuttle service will be arranged by LISHEP from the airport to Hotel Pierre in Itacuruca Island. The Agency Grand Operator will transport you from the airport to the Hotel Pierre (Itacuruçá Island). For that it is very important that you inform the Grand Operator Tourism Agency your: Date and time of Arrival, flight number and Company as well as the city of departure. Please copy to our Secretariat. Participants which have not payed their Conference fee will be charged US$D 15 (about R$ 35) to cover part of the expenses with transportation.

2. Participants arriving after April 2nd. are advised to take a blue taxi from COOTRAMO, which can be booked in advance from their web page, or booked and payed at a desk in the airport. The special price of the run to Itacuruçá Island for LISHEP participants is R$ 160 (about US$D 70) and you can use credit card. The trip will take approximately 1 hour. You should tell COOTRAMO that you are from LISHEP.
Please inform our secretariat of your date and time of arrival, airline, flight number and city of departure.

3. From Hotel Gloria and Hotel Novo Mundo to Hotel Pierre in Itacuruçá

All participants already in Rio de Janeiro, can go to Itacuruçá by especial bus organized by LISHEP which will be stopped near to Hotel Gloria and Novo Mundo.. We will announce a more precise address on the Welcome Bulletin. For that it is very important that you register with Grand Operator Tourism Agency Please copy to our Secretariat. Participants which have not payed their Conference fee will be charged US$D 15 (about R$ 35) to cover part of the expenses with transportation.

The room 3017A, located on the 3rd floor of block A, in the Physics Institute, will be available to the speakers.

VISA

You MAY NEED A VISA to enter Brazil, depending on your nationality. Please, contact the Brazilian diplomatic representation in your country for more detailed information.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT RIO DE JANEIRO

Weather

Rio de Janeiro is located on the Tropics. During this period of year, from March 21st, temperatures range from 23 C (72 F) to 35 (95 F).

Time Zone

Rio's time zone is Greenwich Mean Time minus 3 hours (GMT -3).  For more details, go to http://www.worldtimeserver.com/.

Electrical Power

Electrical power in Rio is mostly 110 Volts / 60 cycles, A.C, but some hotels provide 220 Volts outlets.

Phone Calls

Direct dial and collect calls can be placed from any public telephone. Payed phones are located everywhere and run on cards which are widely available. GSM cell phones will work on Itacuruçá Island.

Currency

Brazilian currency is the Real (R$). The official rate of exchange is available from daily newspapers, hotel cashiers, banks and travel agencies. Cash and travellers checks are easily exchanged at these locations. Many hotels and shops accept foreign currency and Credit Cards. Currently, the dollar to real rate has been around US$ 1.00  ~ R$ 2,30. We use the site http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic to update the currency changes.

Business Hours

Shops in Rio de Janeiro and most offices are open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Malls and/or Shopping Centers remain open from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. . Banks are open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm.. Many pharmacies, supermarkets and small grocery stores are open also on Sunday.

Tipping

Tips are usually given in restaurants and bars, when not included in the bill. They vary from 10% to 15%.
