Description
Dark matter and dark energy are problems of large, astrophysical and cosmological scales. Taking the perspective that these problems may therefore require us to introduce new physics in the infra red, we will argue in the case of additional spin-zero degrees of freedom that this invariably leads to scalar-tensor theories of gravity. Such low-mass physics must be able to evade existing tests of gravity, and we will consider the roles of symmetries, non-linear potentials, and radiative corrections in screening new long-range force laws.
