The Institute is located in central California in the city of Monterey, approximately 130 miles (210 kilometers) south of San Francisco and 350 miles (560 kilometers) north of Los Angeles.
From Airports in San Francisco (SFO) or San Jose (SJC) - This is recommended.
The easiest way to get from both airports to Monterey is to reserve a shuttle from the airport. It picks you up from the airport and drives you to Monterey downtown or to a specific destination. You can book the shuttle here.
Driving
From San Francisco(SFO)
Take US 101 South to CA 156 West, heading toward the Monterey Peninsula. Merge onto CA 1 South. Stay on CA 1 South until you reach the Monterey exit. Take this exit to our campus in downtown Monterey. However, if preferred you can always do a one-way car rental from SFO to MRY airport and get a taxi to your hotel.
By Air
Monterey Airport (MRY)
Fly directly into the Monterey Airport, which is less than 5 miles (8 kilometers) from campus. There are daily flights from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Diego. Then take a taxi to go to your hotel.
San Jose Airport (SJC)
Fly into San Jose Airport, located in Silicon Valley, and take the Monterey Airbus for $40 to downtown Monterey, which is a block from campus. The San Jose Airport is approximately 75 miles (120 kilometers) from Monterey.
San Francisco Airport (SFO)
Fly into San Francisco Airport and take the Monterey Airbus for $50 to downtown Monterey, which is a block from campus. The San Francisco Airport is approximately 110 miles (180 kilometers) from Monterey.
Getting Around Monterey
If arriving from Monterey Airport (MRY): From the Monterey airport, taxicabs meet every flight and will deliver you to the hotel for approximately $20, including tip. There is no need for you to rent a car while in Monterey unless you have difficulty walking since everything is very close. If you do rent a car then you can do that at the MRY airport. Note that Uber also works in Monterey.
Parking
If you have a car then when arriving on campus, please park in the metered parking lot on Pierce Street. Please note that you will need to bring many quarters. Otherwise there is public parking but these are only for 2 hours but is free.
Public Transportation
Public transportation does work in Monterey but buses do not run frequently and there are not many routes. That said, I personally do use bus transportation quite often when commuting from Carmel to Monterey. Here is a link to the bus line: https://mst.org/
