MEC is a Dutch deep tech company, specializing and world-leading in the development and production of Free Piston Stirling Converters. Since the start of the serial production of its E1 product line, MEC as one of the very few Free Piston Stirling Converter production companies in the World has delivered more than 20,000 Stirling Converters for a wide range of applications. MEC’s maintenance-free 1kWe Stirling Converters are driven by a broad range of heat sources (gas, oil, biomass, radioisotope, solar etc.).

For several years now, MEC has not only been working on electricity generating Stirling converters but has also focused on the development of cryogenic Stirling Coolers and Cooling technology. A first product platform (the C1 product line), based on the E1 power producing product line, will become commercially available in the autumn of 2025 in the form of a ‘cooler’, a ‘pack’ and a ‘stack’. The C1 product line with a cooling capacity of 40 watts at 80 K, distinguishes itself - when compared to other commercially available coolers with a comparable duty - with its significantly better cooling efficiency and its lower investments costs because of its common platform with the E1 power converter.

The E1 Stirling Converters have found and are finding their way in Autonomous Power Applications for the oil and gas industry, biobased power and heat for use in agricultural and rural environments and in emergency situations. Numerous E1 Converters are used in research projects, including space programs, all over the World. The participation of MEC in these R&D programs worldwide explains MEC’s deep insight in this field as one of the few organizations on a global scale.

At this stage the C1 Cooling product line is especially suited for industrial gas cooling, gas liquification and larger freezers. Other developments not yet completed, based on novel Stirling concepts, will result in Stirling technology more tailored to high tech applications (semicon, quantum, super conductivity).
