1st AFRICAN NUCLEAR OLYMPIAD


The continent of Africa has been on the background of nuclear technology development and deployment, it has become imperative that young people engage nuclear technology for accelerated development.

The African Nuclear Olympiad is a continental challenge for undergraduate and graduate students on nuclear technology for Africa's development. This is a unique opportunity for students to showcase ingenuity and knowledge on nuclear sciences and applications and how these enhance the quality of life. By participating in African Nuclear Olympiad, students have the opportunity to connect with nuclear organisations and find out more about a career in nuclear science and technology.

First stage - Create a Nuclear Olympiad Video
 

  • Create a video up to 120 seconds (2 mins) long on technical and socio-economic aspects on the topic “Nuclear Technology for Sustainable Development in Africa”

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS:  Thursday, 28 February 2017

 

First Stage – Likes/Verification on Youtube

  • The videos should be opened to public vote by ‘likes’ on youtube.
    These videos MUST showcase the enthusiasm for nuclear, the knowledge, and also the creativity of the students participating in this challenge.

  • At 18:00 UTC , 22 March 2017, the AYGN will verify the number of ‘likes’ each video has received on YouTube since the video was first posted by the author for the purpose of the Nuclear Olympiad. ‘Dislikes’ will not be taken into account.

The AYGN is not responsible for the content of Nuclear Olympiad video submissions. All videos are under the responsibility of their respective authors.


 

Second stage - Interview

Finalists will be interviewed individually by the AYGN on the topic of their presentation. The interview will check:


a) Skilful knowledge. If the candidate demonstrates skilful knowledge on the topic of the video.


b) Interactive skills. If the candidate expresses thoughts clearly; is able to reply to the questions in a logical way; projects enthusiasm; and is able to respond convincingly.


c) Motivation. If the candidate demonstrates an interest in further studies and working in the nuclear area; and shows a strong determination to proceed to the next stage of the African Nuclear Olympiad.
The evaluator is able to deduct points if the candidate fails in any topic of the interview.

Final stage - Nuclear communication message

The ten finalists will elaborate effective messages to communicate to decision makers the need to expand nuclear capacity in Africa. Deadline Thursday, 30 March 2017

The messages should be be simple, concise and easily understood by non-technical people. The messages will have to be supported by evidence that they are effective (reference data provided, message test with sample population, etc.).

Evaluation of the final stage will be made by a jury, based on the following criteria:
a) Clarity of the text
b) Logical organization
c) Well-developed points that are supported with specific evidence
d) Creativity
e) Innovative approach

Terms and Conditions – Final Version (as of 11th January 2016)

 

Candidates and eligibility

 

1) The Olympiad is open to undergraduate and graduate students from any University;

 

2) The Olympiad is open to students from around the world. Submissions, video and written essay, should be in English;

 

3) The Olympiad is open to individuals or group submissions. In the case of group submissions, one team leader must be selected to represent the video in subsequent rounds;

 

4) The AYGN Nuclear Olympiad 2017 is not open to AYGN secretariat staff, or members of their family;

 

Olympiad guidelines and requirements

 

5) First Stage

 

To be considered for the Olympiad, candidates will have to:

 

a. Create a short video of up to one hundred and twenty (120) seconds on the topic of “Nuclear Techniques for Sustainable Development in Africa”;

 

b. Upload the video to YouTube, and set it for public view;

 

c. Create a title for the project that captures the message behind the video, including the word "nuclear". Name and country should not be included in the title;

 

d. Write a short description explaining the content of the video. It is mandatory to include the terms "Nuclear Technology", "Africa", and "AYGN 2017 Olympiad", in order to be considered by the jury;

 

e. Send the YouTube link to AYGN via e-mail to africanygn@hotmail.com

Evaluation of First stage

 

a. Ten videos will be shortlisted from these submissions by the AYGN Nuclear Olympiad jury using the following criteria:

 

Adherence to the theme: Content reflects the theme “Nuclear Technology for Sustainable Development (in Africa)”

 

Factual: Information should be verifiable and true

 

Realistic: Contents should be tangible and captivating

 

Impact: Should have a powerful effect on the viewer relevance: To be relevant to the current global situation and context

 

Creativity: To be original and visually stimulating

 

Assessible: The youtube link should lead to the video with necessary audio content

 

 

b. The authors of the ten videos will be selected by the Jury, and contacted by

email on Friday 05 March 2017.

 

c. They will be asked to reply to this email by Wednesday 10 March 2017, confirming their willingness to participate, and attaching a reference letter from a University professor/Lecturer;

 

d. It is advisable that candidates request their reference letter when they first enter the Olympiad, in order to have it ready to send to the AYGN by this date. For group submissions, only one reference letter is required including the name of the team leader and the name, position and contact details of the professor;

 

e. If the candidate is unable to be contacted or does not have a reference letter,

another finalist will be selected.

 

6) Second stage

 

a. The KYGN will post finalist videos to the KYGN website on Monday 20 March 2017 ;

 

b. No names or nationalities will be included in the post in order to give equal

opportunities to each candidate;

 

c. The videos will be promoted by the KYGN and AYGN and posted to the KYGN Facebook

page.

 

Evaluation of second stage

 

a. The Olympiad videos will be open for public evaluation on the AYGN website,

inviting the public to like their preferred videos on YouTube;

 

b. By Thursday 22 March 2017 17:00 UTC, the AYGN will verify the number of likes each one of the ten videos has received on YouTube. The number of likes will include all likes since the video was first posted by the author for the purpose of the African Nuclear Olympiad. Dislikes will not be taken into account;

 

c. The Two most liked videos in YouTube will qualify for the final stage of the AYGN Nuclear Olympiad.

 

7) Final stage

 

a. The 2 awarded finalists will prepare a maximum 1 page essay in English, including cover page, about “Uranium: How are they produced?” and send it in pdf format to AYGN to africanygn@hotmail.com with the subject: AFRICAN NUCLEAR OLYMPIAD ESSAY” by Thursday, 30 March 2017. This essay will be presented orally (in 5 minutes) during the summit in Nairobi, Kenya.

 

b. For the essay, please use only special characters from the ‘Symbols’ option in Word. If converting files into Word documents from other formats, check all special characters as these are sometimes lost during conversion. List your references and ensure your listings are in fact used in the essay. Harvard is our preferred referencing style;

 

c. The 2 most liked videos will be awarded with $200 and certificate while participating in the Summit Free of charge, accommodation and meals free.

 

Evaluation of final stage

 

The final jury decision will be based on the evaluation criteria:

 

a. Video ‘likes’ in YouTube will count as 5 points for the most liked, 4 points to the second most liked, and subsequently. In case of a tie, equal points will be given.

 

b. The written essay will count 5 points maximum.

 

c. The oral presentation will count 5 points maximum.

 

d. The winner is the one with highest score summing up the scores of the video ‘likes’ count, text and oral presentation.

 

The winning video will be promoted internationally with credit to the author(s).

 

 

Further terms and conditions

 

8) By applying for the AYGN Nuclear Olympiad, all participants agree that the material can

be used in the AYGN promotional material;

 

9) The AYGN reserves the right to disqualify any participants who do not abide by the terms and Conditions, or who are deemed by the AYGN to be acting unfairly in the competition. This includes, but is not limited to, plagiarism and fake or purchased YouTube likes;

 

10) Participants must make sure that they have the right to diffuse the material in their videos, referencing where necessary. The AYGN is not liable for the content, and it is up to the participant to ensure that they have the right to publish their video.
