Description

The proposed new Electron-Ion collider poses a technical and intellectual challenge for the detector design to accommodate the long-term diverse physics goals envisaged by the program; one requires a 4𝝅 detector system capable of identifying and reconstructing the energy and momentum of final state particles with high precision. The EPIC collaboration has formed to design, build, and take data with Detector 1.
EIC requires identifying particles of different masses over an extensive momentum range. This imposes a challenge for making relevant choices about a single PID detector. Thus, a diverse spectrum of PID detectors has been proposed. Of 4 types of PID detectors, three are based on Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter (RICH) technologies, and one is realized by the Time of Flight (ToF) method. Two types of Photon Detectors (PDs) are proposed for these 3 RICHs. Two will most probably be equipped with Silicon Photomultiplier Tubes (SiPMs), and the DIRC RICH [Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov (Light) Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter] will most probably use commercial MCP – PMTs; Large Area Picosecond Photon Detector (LAPPD), with a 20 X 20 cm2 active area, produced and marketed by Incom INC. USA is the most likely candidate.
At NISER, we are setting up the laboratory facility for test characterizing and benchmarking this product. The first GEN II pad segmented LAPPD has been bought, and critical first results are shown. Also, its possible uses in many fields in High Energy Physics and other areas like medical imaging and social security devices will be discussed.
