Description

The hunt for physics beyond the Standard Model is at the dawn of a new era: the quest for dark sectors. These consist of light sub GeV particles very weakly coupled to the visible sector, and they are ubiquitous in many scenarios addressing important open questions such as the microscopic identity of dark matter or the origin of neutrino masses and mixing. Dark sectors motivate novel search strategies that are drastically different than, but complementary to, those at traditional high-energy colliders. Furthermore, several ongoing experiments, if properly tailored, could play a crucial role in the hunt for dark sectors. I will discuss how the distinctive signatures of such physics can already be searched for with existing or planned experiments, including neutrino-proton fixed-target experiments and precision atomic measurements.
