From Delaunay triangulations to pile-up subtraction: when theory and phenomenology meet experiments

Description

Hadron jets are a centerpiece of most analyses at the Large Hadron Collider. In order to work with them effectively, one must be able to properly define them, calculate their properties, extract them from data, measure them with high accuracy. Their internal substructure can be at the same time a mean to groom jets in an otherwise a noisy environment, and a handle to identify specific particles. Progress on all these fronts has been substantial in the past ten years. Thanks to the convergence of old and new algorithms, better numerical implementations, ideas from other fields, and close collaboration between theorists and experimentalists, jets at the LHC are now a standard tool that can be used efficiently and with confidence. In this talk I will present some of the main steps and ideas that have led to this achievement.
