BSM PANDEMIC seminar - Tongyan Lin (UCSD)
Dear physics friends,
Please join us for this week's BSM PANDEMIC seminar, on Tuesday, March 9th at 11 am Pacific/2 pm Eastern. We will begin with a 20-minute social period, followed by the talk.
Our speaker will be Tongyan Lin (UC San Diego)
She will be telling us about:
"Dark matter scattering in dielectrics"
Abstract: Direct detection experiments are rapidly advancing in the search for sub-GeV dark matter. As energy thresholds become lower, the many-body physics of a target material becomes especially important in determining a dark matter signal. In this talk, I will show how dark matter scattering in dielectric materials can be understood in terms of the dielectric response. This provides a useful framework for dark matter direct detection and also allows us to calculate some new effects. I will discuss two applications: screening effects for dark matter electron scattering, and the Migdal effect in semiconductors.
