Description
This special session on entrepreneurship is for all participants and may be of specific interest to early career physicists. The session comprises two half-hour presentations by Dr. Alla Resnik and Dr. Pieter Cullis, two physicists who have successfully translated their research into a number of biomedical startup companies. Dr. Resnik's presentation is titled “Translating Innovation into Impact: Our Journey with the Low-Dose Radialis Positron Emission Mammography System" and Dr. Cullis' presentation is titled “Why be a Scientific Entrepreneur?. This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the two presenters and questions from the panel moderator and the audience.
Early and accurate detection of breast cancer in high-risk women with dense breast tissue remains a critical unmet clinical need, as conventional mammography is less effective for these patients due to tissue density obscuring cancerous lesions. To address this challenge, we have developed an innovative molecular imaging technology: ultra-high sensitivity, low-dose breast-targeted Positron...
Dr. Pieter Cullis will talk about some of the work that he and co-workers have done that led to the Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine from the perspective of being a scientific entrepreneur, insights from spending most of one's career working half-time in academia and half-time in companies (both start-ups and not-for-profits), as well as some of the basic science involved.
