The simultaneous production of four top quarks is the heaviest process accessible via the current energy and luminosity of the CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The large energy involved in the production makes it an ideal proxy to search for hidden heavy degrees of freedom beyond the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Both the ATLAS and CMS experiments have conducted a series of searches for SM 4top production. These searches are challenging due to the extremely small production rate and sophisticated background modelling in the complex final states. In recent results published by the ATLAS experiment, the world’s first evidence of this production is revealed. Most interestingly, the measured production cross section is 2 sigma higher than the SM prediction. There are in fact many beyond-the-SM (BSM) scenarios 4top production is sensitive to. The upcoming LHC Run 3 with an increased pp collision energy of √s = 13.6 TeV will be a unique chance to further explore this exceptional process.
The seminar will be in person in Niels Bohr, Schuster. For those connecting remotely please use:
