The first protons circulated in the LHC beampipe in September 2008. At age 18, the LHC has reached full maturity, and is now preparing to enter the second stage of its life, the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), due to start in 2030 following the next 4 years of upgrades for the experiments, the accelerator and the infrastructure. I will reflect upon the lessons learned so far, focusing on the answers, the open questions and the paradigm changes that emerged from the analyses of the LHC data, with a view at their implications for the future progress of particle physics.
