Using low-pt dimuon events to measure transverse proton structure

Description

We present new methods for measuring the transverse structure of the proton, relying on ratios of event activity variables between events with a low-pt pair of muons and minimum bias events. The event activity is used in a similar way to centrality in heavy ion physics, and the evolution of the hard-process cross section provides information on the effective partonic luminosity as a function of the impact parameter between the protons. We show how the measured effective luminosity can be used to calculate the expected Double Parton Scattering (DPS) cross section within the pocket formula framework. The dependence of the transverse proton structure and the DPS cross section on partonic-x can be measured with this method. Observation of this dependence is expected to be achievable with currently collected data by the LHC experiments based on estimates of the effect size in pythia models.
