The Development of a Tunable Plasma Haloscope using Wires on Concentric Rings

Description

In order to look for axions with a mass above 40 μeV, one must construct a haloscope with a resonant frequency above 10 GHz. At these frequencies, conventional microwave cavity haloscopes have too small of a volume to practically search for higher mass axions. One may overcome this hurdle by constructing a cavity whose inner volume features an array of wires, thereby coupling the resonant frequency of the lowest order TM mode to the wire spacing and wire radius. With this design – known as the plasma haloscope – we are able to construct large volume, high resonant frequency cavities suitable for searching for higher mass axions. In this talk, we will discuss a method of tuning these plasma haloscopes where wires are arranged in spirals and placed along concentric rings. Odd numbered rings rotate relative to even numbered rings, thereby changing the internal geometry and thus the resonant frequency of the lowest TM mode. We will also present a measurement result of the prototype of such a cavity.
