Description
Wave dark matter is often described as a classical field, with this description motivated by the large occupation numbers of ultralight bosonic particles. Yet the relation between a highly occupied quantum many-body state and a single classical field is subtle. In this talk, I will discuss what it means for wave dark matter to admit a controlled classical-field description, emphasizing the role of the large-(N) limit, correlations, and fluctuations. I will also comment on which observables are expected to be captured by an effective classical field, and which may retain sensitivity to the underlying many-body state. The focus will be on general criteria for classicality, rather than on model-specific details.
