Description

Abstract:

Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) is a powerful non-invasive technique for investigating the internal dynamics of opaque granular systems through three-dimensional tracking of a radioactive tracer particle. In this talk, I present the development and current status of a cost-effective PEPT detector system. The detector concept is based on opposing walls of long plastic scintillator bars with dual-ended silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout. Tracer positions are reconstructed from coincident detection of back-to-back 511 keV annihilation photons. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations based on a full Geant4 model were carried out to evaluate spatial resolution and reconstruction performance for different experimental configurations. The results indicate that millimeter-scale spatial resolution can be achieved. First commissioning measurements using a partially assembled detector and a stationary 22Na source show qualitative agreement with the simulation predictions, confirming the feasibility of the proposed detector concept.
