In this talk, we show that combining grand unification and string theory imposes stringent constraints on axions arising within these theories. Specifically, we find that requiring that the string scale is above the unification scale restricts both the QCD axion mass and the total number of axions, using both explicit examples from the Kreuzer-Skarke type IIB ensemble and more general unitarity arguments. Additionally, we comment on exceptional cases that evade these constraints.
