Bridging Education and Research: Inspiring Curiosity, Empowering Future Scientists

by Dr Aimilia Smyrli (NCSR Demokritos)

Europe/Athens
Description

Maximizing the impact of world-leading research at the National Centre for Scientific Research (NCSR) “Demokritos” depends on strong connections between science, education, and society. Education and outreach cultivate critical thinking, inspire curiosity, and open opportunities for broader participation in research. Evidence from initiatives such as the Isaac Physics program and the Ogden Trust in the UK, shows that repeat interventions at schools combined with dedicated undergraduate training in science communication, can widen participation and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Building on this foundation, the Education Office of NCSR “Demokritos” leads innovative programs that highlight the value of research and extend the Centre’s reach across Greece. Projects such as Worlds within Worlds (science through dance), Myth2Space, and environmental monitoring initiatives engage thousands of children nationwide, while new training opportunities in artificial intelligence and public engagement help undergraduate and postgraduate students build essential skills.

These initiatives form part of a broader strategy to support NCSR “Demokritos” as both a centre of scientific excellence and an educational hub by raising its visibility, supporting its PhD community and fostering a dynamic educational ecosystem. Some future steps include exploring the use of virtual reality, deepening collaborations with artists, and developing new funding pathways to sustain and extend its educational impact. Through these efforts, the Education Office acts as a pillar of NCSR “Demokritos”, highlighting that its mission to advance science is aligned with a strong commitment to empower society through education and outreach.
