Description
The Mainz Energy-Recovering Superconducting Accelerator (MESA), located at the Institute for Nuclear Physics on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, is scheduled to begin operation in 2027.
In its energy-recovery linac (ERL) mode, MESA will provide the MAGIX experiment with high-current electron beams reaching 1 mA at energies up to 105 MeV, enabling high-precision measurements. In extracted-beam operation, delivering beam energies of up to 155 MeV and currents of up to 150 µA, the P2 experiment will perform a high-precision determination of the weak mixing angle through parity-violating electron–proton scattering.
Downstream of the high-power beam dump of the P2 experiment, outside the accelerator hall, the parasitic experiment DarkMESA will search for particles from the dark sector produced in the beam dump.
This talk will introduce the MESA accelerator concept, discuss its operating modes and performance, and provide an overview of the scientific goals of the MAGIX, P2, and DarkMESA experiments.
