Description

One of the open challenges in subnuclear physics is to understand the non-perturbative regime of Quantum Chromodynamics, including the world of baryons and their excitations.

At ELSA, as integral part of the new cluster of excellence "Color meets Flavor", a new experiment, INSIGHT, is being set up. It features a unique combination of an almost complete angular coverage for high-resolution photon measurements, charged-particle detection and the ability to perform measurements using a polarized beam and a polarized target.

The new experiment will extend the successful $N^*$- and $\Delta^*$-program especially into the strange baryon sector where the field is starved for data.As in the non-strange baryon sector, also here the measurement of polarization observables will be decisive for an unambiguous and precise determination of the spectrum of excited $\Lambda^*$- and $\Sigma^*$-states.
