Description
The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab published its final measurement of the muon's magnetic anomaly in June 2025, reaching a world-leading precision of 127 ppb. A measurement of the muon's magnetic anomaly, combined with a precise theoretical prediction, can be used to test the completeness of the Standard Model of particle physics, which we know must be incomplete, e.g. it does not account for dark matter. This latest result builds upon the previous two publications, which were based on data from Run-1 (2021) and Runs-2/3 (2023), and incorporates an additional three years of data from Runs-4/5/6. This talk will motivate a measurement of the muon's magnetic anomaly, describe the experiment at Fermilab with a focus on improvements made in the final three runs, and share the final result.
Dr. Foster is a visiting assistant professor of physics at Amherst College, a small liberal arts college in Massachusetts, USA. He was previously a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Kentucky, and he did his PhD at Boston University where he analyzed the Runs-2/3 data from the Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab (which he will talk about today!). He received his Bachelor of Arts in physics from Colgate University. His interests are in precision particle physics experiments, and he works on the Muon g-2 experiment and the rare pion decay experiment PIONEER.
