14:15 → 14:55 Image, Text, and Text–Image Relations: Machine Learning at IHB and Beyond¶

The presentation summarizes activities in connection with machine learning and AI at IHB. Most of all, we summarize the results of the project Ottoman Nature in Travelogues: A Digital Analysis, 1501–1850 (ONiT) funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF: P 35245). The interdisciplinary project unites (art) historians, computer scientists, Ottomanists and librarians from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, the Austrian National Library (ÖNB) and the Marmara University of Istanbul. We use Artificial Intelligence to identify, extract and categorize images and texts about ‘nature’ (flora, fauna, landscapes and maps) in travelogues about the Ottoman Empire that were printed 1501–1850 and survived in the holdings of the ÖNB. The resulting collection of c. 20,000 images is openly accessible within the web application ONiT Explorer at the ÖNB Labs.
