Stars and dust form most of the visible components of galaxies, but what about the unseen gas? We can measure the gas in nearby galaxies with radio telescopes. The gas in galaxies is very important because that is the fuel for star formation. Most galaxies can form stars as long as they have gas and stop their star formation, once there is no more gas. In my talk I will explain the basics of how galaxies use their gas and how astronomers can observe the different types of gas in galaxies.
