Pions and Kaons – From QCD to the Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon

by Adnan Bashir

Australia/Sydney
Description

Pions and kaons are the lightest quark-antiquark bound states. Just like studying the Hydrogen atom led us to the profound understanding of quantum electrodynamics, we expect that the internal structure of pions and kaons would be essential to comprehending the underlying theory of quantum chromodynamics. We undertake this goal through the fundamental equations of motion of a quantum field theory, namely the Schwinger-Dyson equations, written in terms of quarks, gluons and the interactions among them. We provide an overview of the progress in the computation of the pion and kaon form factors and the corresponding experimental efforts at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, the planned Electron-Ion Collider and other hadron physics laboratories, making comparisons with observations and predictions from other theoretical tools. We also discuss the implications of these efforts for the tests of the celebrated Standard Model of particle physics, in particular the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.
