ARAPUCA (X-ARAPUCA to be implemented in ProtoDUNE.) Photon is trapped through wavelength-shifting and dichroic short-pass filters; readout by one or more internal SiPMs.
Milind: Icarus PMTs with TPB get 90 PE/MeV
Steve: We saw gain drifts in these PMTs in MC
Milind: That's due to the large amount of light, which decreases gain over time. Way to mitigate this is to decrease gain - less gain, slower degredation.
This may be a good solution for us, since we probably need much less than 90 PE/MeV.
Hybrid photodetector - bulb, photocathode with tiny silicon detector to create focusing field.

Milind: We have some money for R&D with a company working on ARAPUCA-based devices.
Sergio: In principle, SiPM-based devices can have few-nanosecond timing with sensitive SiPMs. This is scalable by size. Same can be achieved with multiple SiPMs.
DUNE ND design is wavelength-shifter plate with SiPMs. We could use this approach. Could combine with X-ARAPUCA concept.
Alejandro has been working on photodetection for HyperK. Can ask him to study these options.
