Fusion energy will contribute to the energy mix as a clean, safe, sustainable and accessible energy source for any country. Its potential to meet the world's growing energy demands while simultaneously mitigating climate change is unprecedented.
The collaboration between Japan and the European Union (EU) to promote fusion research not only promise to make this extraordinary energy source a reality but also serve as a model of international cooperation for a cleaner and sustainable energy future.
Under this cooperation, it´s remarkable the success achieved under the 'Broader Approach for Fusion' (BA) agreement between Japan and Europe, which has witnessed the jointly development of significant projects such as the JT60SA tokamak in Naka, inaugurated in 2024, the LIPAc accelerator prototype, and the IFERC research centre. However, the most significant outcome of these years of collaboration has been the establishment of close relationships between the fusion research centres of the involved countries. These relationships have been extended to their respective industries, working during the integration and commissioning phases of these projects.
One of the outstanding outcomes of BA activities is the advancement in the construction of a fusion neutron source that will provide critical data on the materials needed for future fusion reactors. Japan is already involved in the design of the Advanced Fusion Neutron Source (A-FNS), and in the European Union, the construction of IFMIF-DONES has already begun in Granada, Spain.
The DONES Programme, which includes the IFMIF-DONES scientific infrastructure being built in Granada, involves currently 17 members, including the current partners Spain and Croatia, as well as future partners who have already confirmed their interest in contributing to the project, such as Japan, Italy and EURATOM (F4E).
Under this scenario, it´s crucial to further strengthen the ties between Japanese and Spanish companies. The first step was given with the presentation meeting of the IFMIF-DONES project to the Japanese industry held in December 2023 in the Spanish embassy of Tokyo in Japan. Since then, the cooperation links between IFMIF-DONES and Japan have become established, culminating with the celebration of this DONES Day at the Osaka World Expo, advancing Japan's future participation in the project. The aim of this event is to introduce the business opportunities that will arise from IFMIF-DONES, promoting industrial cooperation between Japanese and Spanish companies on topics related to IFMIF-DONES.
