Meeting Minutes: EIC Commissioning Tool Development Working Group – Apr 2025 meeting

Date: Apr. 21, 2025

Time: 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST

Presentations:

In this meeting, Jim Jamilkowski from EIC, gave a presentation on the overview of EIC control system and the preliminary plan for interfacing with virtual accelerator development.  The EIC control software will based on EPICS 7 with GUI applications integrating with CS Studio Phoebus.  The EIC control will interface with the legacy system (ADO) of hadron ring and injector systems.   The presentation detailed the scope of interfacing with the virtual accelerator, including the python and web tools and preliminary discussions about timeline, stakeholder requirements on functionality and performance and cyber security requirements.

Discussions:

  • Experiences from APS-U, LCLS-II and FRIB has been shared.  The approaches are based on the specific machne needs therefore are quite different.  APS-U does not rely on-line model, as the operation will stay in one operation mode for a long time after machine setup-up, while LCLS-II and FRIB requires much more freqeunt change in operation mode and / or online-model based feedback systems, where on-line model can be helpful or essential.
  • The discussion suggests the virtual accelerator developement of EIC should clearly define core function of the system and balance the available resources.  The resource needed for software development should not be underestimated.  It is beneficial to separate the propose of commissing tool from the design simulations for determining the hardware specs.
