Title:
Comparison and Validation of Background Subtraction Strategies for the B+ —> K+ pi+ pi+ gamma Analysis at the LHCb Experiment
Abstract:
This work investigates the performance of a well-known and widely-used background subtraction method, namely the sPlot technique, for the B+ —> K+ pi+ pi- gamma decay. The subtraction of the background in this decay channel is especially difficult due to the presence of background contributions that are entirely hidden under the signal peak in the B meson invariant mass spectrum.
We demonstrate that the sPlot technique works well for a similar situation by applying it to a toy dataset. Moreover, we show that the method achieves good results on data from the B+ —> K+ pi+ pi- gamma decay by comparing its output to a dataset that consists of signal events almost exclusively. Here, our analysis consists of two steps: After a visual comparison of the two datasets in each analysis variable, we investigate the similarities of the correlations using a machine learning classifier. Both approaches show promising results, which we present and analyze in the course of this report.
