Kinetic Simulation Techniques in Astrophysics

Otto Stern Zentrum, S4
Center for Scientific Computing, Campus Riedberg, Goethe University
Kinetic methods are one of the many possible approaches to model a system of many particles interacting with each other. The most prominent example is the so-called Particle-in-Cell method (PiC).
PiC is a versatile and extremely easy to implement kinetic method, which is the main factor behind its popularity. The relatively low computational cost is the next point making PiC such a common choice.
In this workshop PiC approaches and their implementation in an HPC context are discussed. The main focus is therefore on the simulation of extremely large systems.
Topics include but are not limited to:
- Basic concepts of different PiC approaches
- Current deposition schemes
- Field solvers
- Particle movers
- Parallelization strategies
- I/O strategies
