Speaker: Professor Giulio Aielli

Professor Giulio Aielli is a faculty at the Physics Department of University of Rome Tor Vergata and also adjunct professor at Istinye University. He is a member of the ATLAS Experiment at CERN. His research focuses on developing detectors capable of identifying particles produced in ultra-high-energy collisions, with a particular emphasis on RPC detectors. He has coordinated major projects to upgrade the ATLAS Experiment and is investigating new technologies -offering greater precision, speed, and sustainability- for future particle physics experiments. His work combines fundamental research, technological innovation, and the training of young researchers.

We will introduce the history, the basic working principles, the physics, and the types of gaseous detectors, with a comparative analysis on their performance and applications.

3 Lect.2: Introduction to the Resistive Plate Chamber and Related Detectors

The Resistive Plate Chamber is a very successful detector technology, spread in any type of particle physics experiment. We will deepen the physics principles of RPCs, addressing the features and the limits, and we will see their past, present and future applications. At the end two new technologies, stemming from the RPC concept, promising for a major breakthrough in achieving a new order of magnitude of performance.
