DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Joshua Horswill (Greenpixie\, ex-LHCb)\n\nCO2-eq emi
ssions from the ICT sector are larger than the aviation industry. Accordin
g to industry surveys of enterprises over the last 5 years\, ~30% of cloud
spend is wasted due to over-provisioning. Assuming spend is roughly propo
rtional to cloud energy usage\, this represents the equivalent annual aver
age consumption of ~50 million UK households\, or the average annual emiss
ions of ~25\,000 cars on UK roads. This also represents significant opport
unity cost\, blocking more useful compute that generates research and busi
ness value. Frameworks have been built to track cloud usage via tagging an
d tracking cloud spend to hold certain users and teams accountable. This d
rives downsizing of over-provisioned virtual machines\, enacting auto-shut
down procedures outside of working hours\, deleting unused stored data\, a
nd relying on batch-processing and ‘spot’ instance usage where possibl
 e. However\, uptake of these frameworks rely on cross-functional employee
engagement\, which can be a challenging problem to overcome. In this talk\
, I will discuss the methodology behind Greenpixie’s granular sustainabi
lity data\, which estimates the impact of 10M+ cloud and AI products. This
empowers enterprise leaders to track their cloud impact and motivate team
s to scale their cloud usage responsibly\, working from the adage: “It i
s not their budget\, but it is their planet”.\n\nhttps://indico.global/e
