DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Brian Moser (University of Freiburg)\n\nThe discover
y of the Higgs boson in 2012 was a triumph for our understanding of how na
ture works at the smallest scales. In the past decade\, many properties of
this unique particle have been measured. But despite this remarkable prog
ress\, our global picture of the Higgs boson is still blurry. One of the m
ost important properties has so far eluded precise experimental testing: t
he Higgs potential. Theory predicts that the Higgs boson’s underlying qu
antum field has a Mexican-hat shaped potential with a minimum at non-zero
field values. The exact shape of this potential has far-reaching implicati
ons for our understanding of the electroweak vacuum and can be linked to b
aryogenesis in the early universe. But how can we test it?\nIn my seminar\
, I will show how searches for Higgs boson pair production with the ATLAS
detector at the LHC enable us to directly probe the shape of the Higgs pot
ential through the Higgs boson self-interaction. Starting from a recent sn
apshot of the Higgs boson\, I will discuss the experimental challenges tha
t searches for Higgs boson pair production currently face\, and how we ove
rcome them. Then\, I will demonstrate the roadmap towards observing this r
are process at the High-Luminosity LHC. A focus will be laid on the curren
tly ongoing upgrade of the ATLAS silicon pixel detector\, in particular th
 e construction and characterisation of larger-scale prototypes.\nhttps://c
