Commission C17 – Leadership changes (Electronic vote, December 2025)

Accepted the resignation of Cather Simpson (New Zealand) as Chair of C17 starting on January 1 2026.
Appointed Kathy Lüdge (Germany), then Vice Chair of C17, as new Chair of C17 starting on January 1 2026.
Appointed Parinda Vasa (India), then Secretary of C17, as Vice-Chair starting on January 1 2026.

Commission C2 – New Associated Member (Electronic vote, December 2025)

Appointed Dr. Katy Klauenberg (Germany) as Associated Member of C2.

The appointment strengthened C2’s expertise in metrology, statistics, and measurement uncertainty, and supported IUPAP’s representation within the BIPM GUM Working Group.

Working Group 21 – Physics for Climate Change Action and Sustainable Development (Vote by email circulated on 29 January 2026)

Approved the appointment of Awnesh Singh as a member of WG21.

Commission C7 on Soft Matter – Election of officers (Electronic vote, March 2026)

Approved the inaugural officers of the newly established Commission C7

Standing Committee on Major Neutron Research Facilities (Electronic vote, March 2026)

Appointed Fulvia Pilat (USA), Director of the Accelerator Institute at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, as Chair of the newly established Standing Committee on Major Neutron Research Facilities.

Commission C7 on Soft Matter – Election of members (Electronic vote, May 2026)

C7 started with the composition of WG15 on Soft Matter. This required changes to abide by IUPAP’s Internal Regulations on the composition of Commissions. To this, the EC approved the following membership changes for C7:

Outgoing members: Andrea Liu (USA), David Weitz (USA), Hajime Tanaka (Japan), and Zhong-can Ou-Yang (China Beijing).
Incoming members: Marjolein Dijkstra (Netherlands), Yuriy Lvovich Raikher (Russian Federation), Ryoichi Yamamoto (Japan), and Fangfu Ye (China Beijing)

Election of New Associate Member for C11 (Electronic vote, July 2026)

Approved the appointment of Rachid Mazini (South Africa) as Associated Member of C11.

The decision was made after the former associated member, Deepak Kar from South Africa, sadly passed away in 2025.

IUPAP signed the Rome Declaration "Humanity at the Threshold: A Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear Weapons"
Various MOUs.

Highlights of 2026 activities and related news

IYQ 2025 Closing ceremony. Participation in UNESCO led Global Quantum Initiative as a founding partner.
Participation in the Quantum Diplomacy in Action Conference on May 6, 2026 and in the 2026 Global Conference on the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development 2024-2034.
IUPAP presence at IAEA 2nd International Conference on Accelerators for Research and Innovation
IUPAP/UNESCO series of colloquia on Physics for Society.
IUPAP Presence at the 2026 COSPAR Scientific Assembly. New MOU with COSPAR. Discussions with representatives of IAU, COSPAR and other organizations to advance with the creation of a SC on Multi-messenger Astrophysics and to draft a statement on the use of space for research and other purposes.
Participation in the Beijing Science Dialogue and ISC mid-term meeting, October 2026 where, among other things, we co-organized with IAU, COSPAR and Chinese colleagues and organizations a one-day symposium on Space Science.

Proposed resolutions

The IUPAP Commission on Particles and Fields (C11) recognizes the value of the process for the development of a Latin American Strategy for High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics conducted by the Latin American community organized through the Latin American Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (LASF4RI), which resulted in a Physics Briefing Book based on submitted white papers showcasing the landscape of activities in these areas of research, a Strategy Document containing recommendations for the future development of HECAP in Latin America, and an endorsement of the Strategy Document by a High-Level Strategy Group.
