Colloquium Abstract: The GINGER project was born nearly 15 years ago for realising Earth-based General Relativity tests by measuring the Earth's rotation rate with unprecedented precision. To this end, we are building an array of ring-laser gyroscopes at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory. On its way, improving the comprehension and the performance of this class of device the GINGER collaboration has disclosed several interesting aspects both of the RLGs underlying physics and on the applicability of rotation data to geophysics and seismology.
