Disentangling possible New Physics and QCD in penguin decays

by Ulrik Egede (Monash University (AU))

Australia/Sydney
Description

The LHCb experiment has allowed for the detailed study of decays of b-hadrons that in the Standard Model are mediated by electroweak penguin diagrams. The measurements include the branching fraction of the Bs→μμ, the angular distribution of the decay products in Bd→K∗μμ and lepton flavour universality tests comparing Bu→Kμμ and Bu→Kee. The more than 100 independent measurements show a coherent deviation from the naive Standard Model expectation and hints at New Physics involving a Vector coupling. However, as non-perturbative QCD plays a big role in the theoretical expectations, there is a large discussion in the community about to what extent this is a sign of New Physics. I will review the existing measurement, critically discuss the interpretations and discuss how future measurements can be designed to teach us about QCD and possible New Physics contributions at the same time.
